Digital Ripping

File Preparation

In 2003 I was asked to troubleshoot the workflow in a large wide format printing company. They produced real estate boards as well as other promotional material and a lot of custom paper for laminate production. A lack of communication and understanding between the pre-press and printing departments resulted in a lot of finger pointing when work wasn't finished on time or on budget. After speaking to both camps I changed the way files were prepared in the pre-press department and then tested the results with the printers. After years of waiting 30-40 minutes for each file to be interpreted and ready to print, I had files being interpreted in just a few minutes, allowing printing machines to continuously print rather than stand idle while waiting for the next file. Another problem at this company was that the lightweight paper being supplied for the laminate prints was not feeding through the machines properly and every 3rd or 4th 3.6 metre sheet had to be thrown out. I went to the laminate plant and spoke to the staff who made the paper, explained the issues and advised that I wanted them to roll the paper tighter on the reels. When the new paper arrived and was loaded into the printing machines the loss ratio went down to about 1 in 10 prints.
