Web Based File Delivery

Digital Workflow Creation

Moving to a smaller wide format printing company still producing real estate boards as well as traditional work resulted in me having a more hands on role. And it wasn't long before I began to identify many areas that could be improved. Web Based File Delivery was the new way files were coming to the print room, but it was cumbersome to save them to the local machine, open each one individually, rotate to suit the printing press and change particular colours to other values so they come out matching the clients corporate specification. And then do it all again on the next file, over and over, about 150 to 200 times a week at 5 minutes each. My solution was to create an automated work flow that had just four input folders. Attached to these folders were a set of rules that rotated or not, changed colours or not and scaled the file. All the operator had to do was preview the web based pdf file in the browser, and save it into the correct hot folder on the desktop. Everything that was required to happen to the file happened automatically and the file went straight into the queue, ready to print. This system reduced operator hours from 12-16 hours per week to process the files, down to 25-35 minutes, OR just 3.5% of the time it used to take!
